How can we help?
Answers to the most common questions about Authenticator App.
What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?
Two-factor authentication adds a second step to signing in: something you know (your password) plus something you have (a 6-digit code generated on your device). Even if your password is stolen, your account stays protected.
How do I add an account?
Tap + in the app and scan the QR code shown by the service you are setting up. You can also import accounts from a saved QR code image, or enter the setup key manually.
How do I back up my codes?
Enable iCloud sync in the app settings. Your accounts are backed up end-to-end encrypted and restored automatically on any device signed in to the same iCloud account.
I got a new iPhone — how do I restore my codes?
Install Authenticator App on the new device and sign in to the same iCloud account. With iCloud sync enabled, your codes appear automatically.
What happens if I lose my device?
If iCloud backup was enabled, restore your codes on a new device by signing in to the same iCloud account. Additionally, most services offer recovery codes when you enable 2FA — always store them in a safe place.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your 2FA secrets are stored encrypted on your device and stay encrypted in iCloud. Nobody — including us — can read your codes.
